I tend to not write about myself that often. My logic behind this is, I realize that I am not that important in the grand scheme of things. I am important to my family, but outside of that I am of no importance or relevance for that matter. There is one thing that I do want to share though.
Goals, I’ve always heard about others having goals but I never really knew or understood the importance of having goals. When I was retiring from the military every single counselor told me that I need to establish a goal and that I need to find a hobby. Time is an enemy and if you cannot use time to your advantage, it can easily take over your life.
It took awhile and I wasn’t necessarily looking for a goal, it just happened to make sense one day. My wife and I were talking, after a career of being separated from my family for years at a time I think we have figured out the goal that we want to accomplish.
We are trying to pay our home off in the next three years. We are a few hundred thousand in debt but so far we have been able to put a substantial dent in that debt. We figure that the sooner we can be free of debt the easier life becomes since debt will be one less thing that we have to worry about.
We have always been rather frugal. We were a single income family for almost our entire union. So, I decided to volunteer for more hours at work. I work practically every weekend and I probably get about 60-70 hours a week. I do not enjoy working and I hate to always be at work and away from my family. But every payday I can pay down the principal and it makes going to work that much easier.
I see progress, I see us eventually achieving our goal. We might not get there in three years, but we are much closer than we were two years ago and that makes it easier as well. I have finally found my goal and I gotta tell you, my friends and family probably get tired of hearing about it every two weeks!!! LOL.
So, no matter what you do in life, don’t just do it day to day. Figure out what you want to accomplish and map it out. Come up with a plan and establish milestones so you can measure your progress. If you cannot measure your goal, you may lose interest rather quickly.
I know it is easier said than done, but figure out what you want to achieve. Life suddenly becomes easier since the sacrifices and compromises you make will be calculated and understood. Ultimately towards meeting and achieving your goal.
